David R. Roefaro, Mayor
City of Utica, New York
03/15/10 - Travel to the city? Ever used a cab?

'Taken for a ride' in New York City?

           Mayor Roefaro can help.

March 15, 2010 – (Utica, NY) – Utica Mayor David Roefaro is hoping any area resident who has traveled to New York City and used a taxi knows about the cab scam that was exposed last week and the potential to get stolen cash back.

An illegal fare scam was exposed by the Taxi and Limousine Commission that said cab drivers were switching rate codes during rides and overcharging tourists and New Yorkers alike.

Mayor Roefaro is asking residents who feel like they have been overcharged in a NYC taxi and paid their fare with a credit card to contact him at his office.

"Lots of area residents spend time in New York City, taking taxis and spending money. A cab ride is costly even without a dishonest taxi driver raising its price. Working with the Bloomberg administration, I will do everything I can to make anyone who can prove they were a victim whole again," the mayor said.

In the future, taxi cabs will alert tourists, and all users, if they are being charged the higher fare.
