09/24/09 - Mayor getting closer to the shovel

Downtown Parking Garage Construction Moves to Final Phase Before Construction

Mayor Issues Requests for Proposals

September 24, 2009- (Utica, NY) - Mayor David R. Roefaro has announced the availability of Requests For Proposals seeking qualified firms or teams of firms to undertake the architectural and engineering design of the new parking garage proposed for Downtown.

Available since mid September, over seventy firms from across the Northeast have expressed an interest in the project and requested a copy of the RFP.  Proposals must be submitted to Brian Thomas, Director of Urban Planning by 3 PM on Thursday, October 8, 2009.  Due to the federal funds involved in the project, the selection process must be qualifications-based in accordance with the Brooks Act.

Utica Mayor David Roefaro said, “I’ve been working tirelessly to put a shovel in the ground, and begin the parking garage construction. Today, we’ve moved one step closer to that goal by jumping though one last hoop of the planning process. The behind the scenes work we’re doing to make this happen will pay off very shortly,” the mayor said. “This announcement, coupled with the recent RESTORE-NY award grant we secured will significantly enhance our economic development efforts Downtown.”

Assemblywoman RoAnn Destito also commented on the progress Mayor Roefaro has made in working towards a shovel in the ground, “This new parking garage is a key component of Mayor Roefaro’s efforts to revitalize Downtown Utica,” she said. “I have awarded $1.75 Million in Assembly funding for this project because it is essential to have adequate Downtown parking, so that the City of Utica can market historic Downtown properties like the Harza Building the Adirondack Bank building, and other smaller buildings for businesses and retailers.”

Questions regarding the project should be directed to Brian Thomas, Director of Urban Planning at 315-792-0185.
