Lead Safe Utica

A PROGRAM TO REDUCE THE RISK OF LEAD HAZARDS IN YOUR HOME. THIS PROGRAM IS AVAILABLE TO LOW-TO-MODERATE INCOME HOUSEHOLDS IN THE CITY OF UTICA. A PARTNERSHIP OF THE CITY OF UTICA AND UTICA NEIGHBORHOOD HOUSING SERVICE, INC.

FOR FURTHER INFORMATION, PLEASE CALL 315-724-4197.

Lead poisoning is a serious health problem for young children - especially children under the age of 6. Even children who appear healthy may have high levels of lead. You cannot tell if a child has lead poisoning unless you have your child tested.

You may have lead in the dust, paint or soil in and around your house or apartment. Ordinary dust or dirt may contain lead. Most homes built before 1960 contain leaded paint. Some homes built as recently as 1978 may contain leaded paint.

It is important that you identify lead hazards in your property in order to keep your family and tenants healthy and safe.

If you qualify, Lead Safe Utica can assist you with:

  • Identifying lead hazards in your home.
  • Referral services for lead testing your children.
  • Reducing lead hazards in your home.
  • Referral to other programs and services at UNHS for assistance in addressing lead hazards.

Program Guidelines

  • A grant award to income qualified City of Utica residents.
  • Priority will be given to residences where children under the age of six reside.
  • Property must have been built prior to 1978.
  • Property must be current on property and school taxes and homeowner's insurance.
  • Grant award is restricted to lead hazard control work.
  • Maximum assistance is $12,000 per unit.
  • Blood testing for lead levels is required for children under the age of six.
  • A full lead risk assessment will be required on all projects.
  • This award may be used in conjunction with other existing UNHS rehabilitation programs.

"Lead poisoning in young children is an avoidable hazard and this program will help to ensure the safety and welfare of the City's children."
