STARTING SALARY/RANGE:                   $39,929           Department of Public Safety, Bureau of Fire

 

VACANCIES:  There is currently one (1) vacancy at the Department of Public Safety, Bureau of Fire.  The eligible list resulting from this examination will also be used to fill this vacancy and appropriate vacancies as they occur in all agencies and special districts under the jurisdiction of the Utica Municipal Civil Service Commission.

 

RESIDENCE REQUIREMENT: Candidates must be legal residents of the City of Utica for at least four (4) months immediately preceding the date of the written examination.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Graduation from High School or possession of a High School Equivalency Diploma issued by the New York State Department of Education and three (3) years of experience as an Automotive Mechanic and a valid NYS Driver License.

DUTIES:  This is highly skilled work involving responsibility for the repair and maintenance of fire apparatus and equipment.  This employee leads in and participates in all phases of the work.  Work is broadly outlined by the Fire Chief permitting wide leeway for planning work.  Supervision may be exercised over other employees that may be assigned to assist.  Any unusual problems or situations, not previously encountered, are referred to the Fire Chief before action is taken.  The incumbent does related work as required.

 

SUBJECTS OF EXAMINATION:

 

1.                  Maintenance and Repair of Motor Vehicles

These questions test for knowledge of the operating characteristics of the various mechanical and electrical components of motor vehicles and diagnostic practices involved in the maintenance and repair of these components.

 

2.                  Operation, Maintenance, and Repair of Automotive, Truck, and Heavy Highway Maintenance Equipment

These questions test for knowledge of the operating characteristics of various components of automotive and heavy motor vehicle equipment and the proper maintenance and repair procedures to use on this equipment.

 

 

 

 

 

 

3.                  Maintenance and Repair of Fire Apparatus

These questions test for knowledge of the operating characteristics of various types of fire apparatus, including fire trucks, hoses, ladders, pumps, extinguishers, and similar equipment, and the proper practices involved in the testing, maintenance, and repair of this apparatus and equipment.

 

4.                  Tools and Test Equipment Used in the Maintenance of Automotive Equipment

These questions test for knowledge of the correct procedures to use when checking, maintaining, and repairing automotive equipment, including the proper and safe use of various tools, instruments, circuit testers, and similar types of mechanical and electrical test and repair equipment.

 

5.         Maintenance and Repair of Mechanically and Electronically Controlled Gasoline and Diesel Engines

These questions test for knowledge of the technical operating characteristics of internal combustion engines, including the ability to troubleshoot symptoms of poor operation and to diagnose typical mechanical or electrical system problems.

 

6.         Scheduling Work and Equipment

            These questions test for knowledge of work scheduling principles and for the ability to arrange work and equipment assignments in a manner that will achieve work goals while staying within scheduling criteria.  This may include such areas as setting up vacation or work schedules, taking into consideration such factors as seniority, work skills, duty hours, and shift coverage.

 

7.         Supervision

These questions test for knowledge of the principles and practices employed in planning, organizing, and controlling the activities of a work unit toward predetermined objectives.  The concepts covered, usually in a situational question format, include such topics as assigning and reviewing work; evaluating performance; maintaining work standards; motivating and developing subordinates; implementing procedural change; increasing efficiency; and dealing with problems of absenteeism, morale, and discipline.
